With the term “cervical syndrome“ we characterize the discomfort or combination of symptoms due to a condition of the cervical vertebrae, intervertebral discs, joints, nerves or muscles in the neck area.
The causes are many and varied: fatigue of the neck muscles at work, sprain of a joint in the neck after injury (for example in sports activities or after a car accident), degenerative disease of the cervical spine e.g. discopathy (protrusion or herniation of an intervertebral disc that presses on a nerve) at younger ages, spondyloarthropathy at older ages, problem in the shoulder joint, reflection of pain from chest diseases (lung or heart problems), migraine, labyrinth diseases, etc.
The wide variety of possible causes makes clinical diagnosis and proper imaging important. Depending on the radiographic findings and the amount of pain felt by the patient, possible treatments include immobilization with a simple collar, the administration of appropriate medication, or even invasive treatment.
