 Hip Osteoarthritis

Οστεοαρθρίτιδα ισχίουIn contrast to the shoulder joint, the hip joint hip is one of the most common areas affected by osteoarthritis.

The causes are varied and are due to:

– heredity

– age over 40 years

– gender: women are particularly susceptible, especially over 55 years

– history of sports injuries

– patient’s medical history: collagenosis e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, gout, etc.

– lifestyle: excessive exercise, obesity, repetitive joint movements, etc.

The symptoms of this condition include:

– hip stiffness,

– hip joint pain,

– lameness (the patient limps).

The recommended treatment, depending on the extent of the problem and the pain felt by the patient, includes:

  • conservative treatment
    • intra-articular injection (i.e. injection into the hip joint): depending on the extent of the inflammation, injections of a mixture of local anesthetic and steroid or injections with injectable artificial synovial fluid (hyaluronic acid) are applied. Patients experience immediate pain relief and joint mobility improves.
    • administration of anti-inflammatory medication
    • physiotherapy
    • kinesiotherapy
  • surgical treatment
    • arthroscopy
    • arthroplasty
      • total hip arthroplasty
      • surface arthroplasty
