The recommended treatment, depending on the extent of the problem and the pain felt by the patient, includes:

  • conservative treatment
    • intraarticular injection (i.e. injection into the knee joint): depending on the extent of the inflammation, injections of a mixture of local anesthetic and steroid or injections with injectable artificial synovial fluid (hyaluronic acid) are applied. Patients experience immediate pain relief and joint mobility improves.
    • administration of anti-inflammatory medication
    • physiotherapy
    • kinesiotherapy
  • surgical treatment
    • arthroscopy
    • arthroplasty
      • total knee arthroplasty
      • tibial osteotomy in young patients with knee osteoarthritis
